The following "Digital Transformatoin" IoT subproject was set up by FSS as a pilot project at VARO and is near to completion:
VARO Energy - a major energy company in northwestern Europe - has three business areas. The refining, warehousing and distribution of oil products. Every day, several thousand gallons of oil are transported by rail across Europe to the nearest tank storage. This includes more than 1000 rail cars, which VARO operates.
Together with FSS, VARO wants to implement a digital transformation project for logistics on the rails. The project, which is known as tank car management, relies on asset intelligence, among other things. This means that every freight car is equipped with sensors and a GPS.

The mileage, load data and position of the cars are recorded accurately and can be viewed in real-time on a Google Maps. Using the data, VARO can always track exactly where the tank wagon is located, whether it is in a depot, refinery or repair, and how long it takes. The whole thing is connected to the JD Edwards.

Real-time networking, communication, monitoring, and real-time control provide businesses with lots of benefits. These include process optimization, increasing productivity and improving cost efficiency. Almost everything is possible today with "IoT". It needs a solution and the right sensor for it. FSS's approach is called "Digital Transformation for SMEs".
